Designed by H R Bastow, an architect with the Public Works Department, this large single storey brick building with a steeply pitched slate roof was completed in 1877. In 1913 there were major additions to the rear and various alterations to the front including the replacing of some of the original small round beaded windows with very much larger rectangular windows.

Rectangular in plan, the building is constructed of random coursed bluestone with gabled ends and a corrugated roof.
